Moving a FACEBOOK Mountain

I'm a self confessed Facebook fanatic and for the longest time, that "BROKEN HEART" icon has been bothering me. To fellow Facebook freaks, you know what I'm talking about. It's the symbol that appears beside a relationship status when changed from IN A RELATIONSHIP, ENGAGED or MARRIED to being SINGLE again.

I personally can't relate to this since I never broadcast the real score of my lovelife status online ever since. Plus, I've been "technically" single since Facebook came about but somehow, that BROKEN HEART icon just doesn't feel right generically. I have discussed this with some of closest girl friends and they strongly agreed. (And to think they are in good relationships!)

I imagine myself being in the shoes of those who had just broken up or worse, the engagement or wedding got called off and I change my status back to being single... and there it is flashing all over the computer screens of everyone I know (or not know!)... the avatar of my "broken heart."

From there springs forth pity, gossips, and ego tripping from the internet world... Posts like "What happened?! You ok?", "Poor you!", "Oh well, that's life. Move on!", "You'll be ok!" etc. BLAH BLAH... In short, all the shit you already know and don't want to hear no matter how genuine their intentions are. So I wonder, if I was this singled out person labelled with a "BROKEN HEART" and I look at my ex's page with a "FULL HEART" icon since he is now with another girl whom he left me for, where is justice for me?!  Thus, 4 days ago I decided to write to the Facebook Team via their Suggestion Page. Here goes my note:

Dear Facebook,

In behalf of the single Facebook users or those who just recently became single again, I strongly impose that you change the "BROKEN HEART" icon that appears when you change back to "SINGLE" status into something more positive. Not being "IN A RELATIONSHIP", "ENGAGED", OR "MARRIED" should NOT be considered broken. It's also a celebration of strength and being whole again on your own. Please think of another icon that's more uplifting. Kindly take action and help the "just turned single" people feel complete again with just a small gesture. More power.

Just this afternoon, I am on Facebook and accidentally saw a friend's changed status from the Live Feed. She went from IN A RELATIONSHIP to being SINGLE. And the avatar beside it was no longer a broken heart but a "FULL HEART". It brought a big smile to my face! :)

I'm not quite sure if the change was caused by what I wrote or I'm probably just one in a million who voiced out about this and the result was coincidental. But it still felt amazing to be able to move a Facebook mountain with just one, short e-mail. Now that's what I call EXCELLENT customer service!

I dedicate this to all the Facebook users (even the non-users as well!) who's been in the solitary journey or those who just turned single again recently. Be strong, willing, and proud to stand alone again! Trust that God will supply all the love we need right now and someday, He will deliver the deep & hidden desires of our soul as promised. Victory shall be ours! :)
